4th of July Risk Roundup – Stay Safe While Celebrating the 250th Anniversary!
Multiple federal agencies have put out reminders to citizens of the various risks they will face while celebrating outdoors for the 250th anniversary of the United States.
FEMA is encouraging citizens to practice proper firework safety this weekend through having water on hand, choosing a safe location, and following weather patterns.
FEMA is also reminding citizens of the risks of extreme heat this weekend, as much of the country will be experiencing a heat wave this weekend while conducting outdoor celebrations.
Finally, the CDC is asking citizens to protect themselves against mosquito bites by using insect repellant and wearing long, loose-fitting clothing. This risk is of special concern due to 2026 seeing the earliest start to the West Nile virus season, which is transmitted by certain types of mosquito, in the United States since 2004.
Analyst Comment: Houses of Worship (HOWs) often serve as community gathering spaces during holidays and the 4th of July is no different. Faith leaders are encouraged to read the above guidance to prepare for local events, as well as inform their staff and community of the risks and how to protect themselves from them.
Construction work appears to have caused fire at historic SF church
A fire that severely damaged San Francisco’s historic Central Seventh-day Adventist Church appears to have been accidentally caused by construction work being performed on the building, according to preliminary findings from fire investigators. Built in 1892, the church suffered extensive damage when flames spread through the upper levels, causing the roof to collapse into the main worship area and leaving significant fire and water damage throughout the interior. More than 100 firefighters responded to the blaze and used drone technology with thermal imaging to help contain the fire; no injuries were reported, although five people were displaced from a nearby building.
Analyst Comment: As this incident demonstrates, construction or renovation at facilities creates additional risks for HOWs. Fires, water intrusion, and other types of damage can lead to construction projects becoming delayed, or even loss of access to a facility entirely. Furthermore, construction can introduce new security risks to a facility by providing new points of access and enabling the presence of unfamiliar personnel on-site.
