A gunmen attacked St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Jordan’s Karak governorate during a funeral, killing nine people and wounding nearly 40. A survivor described three masked assailants firing indiscriminately at mourners, returning to shoot victims again, and firing at the church façade. Jordanian authorities characterized the attack as terrorism, while the assailants’ motive remained unknown at the time of reporting.
Analyst Comments: This attack underscores the vulnerability of faith-based organizations during funerals and other high-attendance events, when crowds, grief, and open access can complicate threat detection and emergency response.

Additional Readings:
A gunman firing from a vehicle across several locations in the Paris suburbs of Trappes and La Verrière killed one person and wounded five others, including a 12-year-old girl. Police arrested the suspect shortly afterward, and France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor opened an investigation into whether victims were targeted because of their race, ethnicity, nationality, or perceived religion. French officials described the shooting as a racist terrorist attack, while CAIR condemned the violence and called for a transparent investigation.
Analyst Comments: The attacker used a vehicle to move quickly between three public locations in Trappes and La Verrière, firing from the car and completing the attack in approximately 15 minutes. Reporting identifies the locations as public areas including a playground, a medical center, and a gas station not religious facilities, although authorities said victims may have been selected based on race or perceived religion. The mobility of the attack reduced warning time and allowed the assailant to threaten multiple locations before police intervened. For faith-based organizations and community centers, this represents a high-impact, low-likelihood threat that is difficult to prevent but should be considered in emergency planning.
Because organizations may have little or no advance warning, planning should emphasize rapid recognition, immediate protective action, and timely information sharing rather than relying on perimeter measures alone.
