These updates are shared to help raise the situational awareness of Faith-Based organizations to best defend against and mitigate the impacts from all-hazards threats including physical security, cybersecurity, and natural disasters.

KY: Thief rips air-conditioning unit from Louisville church

A thief removed the air-conditioning unit from Pure in Heart Baptist Church Louisville’s California neighborhood sometime between Sunday, Aug. 30, and the following weekend, taking the unit along with its lines. After members discovered the theft when the sanctuary became unusually hot, the congregation relocated services to a fellowship hall equipped with a wall unit. The 54-year-old church hopes insurance will cover a replacement and plans to strengthen security around the building.

Analyst Comments: The theft highlights the vulnerability of exterior mechanical equipment at houses of worship, particularly in areas with limited lighting, surveillance, or after-hours activity. This equipment can be targeted because it contains valuable copper and other metals that can be resold. Measures that can deter theft and support investigation and recovery include:

• Tamper-resistant fasteners
• Protective cages
• Improved lighting
• Expanded camera coverage
• Clear asset markings

Facility leaders can further reduce disruption by documenting equipment serial numbers, inspecting exterior systems regularly, reviewing insurance coverage, and identifying contingency locations for worship and other essential activities.

FBI Cyber Strategy

The FBI’s 2026 Cyber Strategy establishes a framework for defending the public and critical infrastructure against increasingly sophisticated nation-state and criminal cyber threats, including, ransomware, fraud, infrastructure intrusions and the accelerating use of artificial intelligence.

The strategy centers on four pillars:

• Investigating, disrupting, and imposing costs on adversaries
• Supporting victims through rapid intelligence sharing, incident engagement, specialized assistance, and reporting
• Increasing impact through partnerships with government, international allies, and the private sector
• Strengthening the FBI’s cyber capabilities by developing talent, technical tools, expertise, and responsibly governed AI

Together, these priorities align the FBI’s law enforcement, intelligence, and national security authorities to pursue adversaries, aid recovery, and coordinate cyber defense at scale.

Analyst Comments: The strategy reinforces that cyber defense depends on rapid reporting, trusted partnerships, and coordinated action across government, law enforcement, international partners, and the private sector.

Faith-based organizations can strengthen alignment with this approach through the following actions:

• Establish procedures for reporting suspected cyber incidents promptly to the FBI, CISA, insurers, and other relevant partners
• Maintain current contact information for law enforcement, technology providers, financial institutions, and incident-response partners
• Preserve logs, suspicious messages, transaction records, and other evidence that can support investigation and recovery
• Exercise incident-response and continuity plans with local or state law enforcement and other relevant partners, accounting for ransomware, fraud, infrastructure disruption, and AI-enabled deception
• Share relevant threat information through trusted networks while protecting sensitive organizational and personal data
