What to know about the attacks at a Michigan synagogue and a Virginia university

A series of recent incidents targeting Jewish institutions in North America has raised security concerns across faith-based communities. In West Bloomfield, Michigan, a man drove a vehicle into a synagogue and opened fire inside the building before being killed by security personnel. A security guard was injured, but approximately 140 preschool children and staff were safely evacuated. Authorities are investigating the incident as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.

The attack occurred amid a broader pattern of threats and violence directed at Jewish institutions in North America. In Canada, three synagogues in the Toronto area were targeted in separate shooting incidents within a five-day period, including two synagogues struck by gunfire within roughly 30 minutes of each other during Shabbat services. While no injuries were reported in the Canadian incidents, the attacks occurred while congregants were present and have heightened concern among community leaders. Collectively, these incidents illustrate a pattern of repeated targeting of Jewish houses of worship across multiple jurisdictions, contributing to heightened vigilance among religious organizations and security officials.

Analyst Comments: Taken together, the incidents in Michigan and Canada illustrate how rapidly evolving global developments and heightened tensions can influence the domestic threat environment by potentially motivating individuals or small groups to target symbolic community institutions. Houses of worship often serve as visible symbols, making them attractive targets for individuals seeking to generate fear or attention. The Michigan incident also highlights the value of preparedness, as reports indicate the synagogue had recently conducted active shooter training, which likely contributed to the swift response by security personnel and staff that helped prevent further harm. Monitoring these incidents across jurisdictions can help identify emerging patterns or shifts in the threat landscape, particularly when similar targets are repeatedly selected within a short timeframe. Continued situational awareness can support early identification of potential risks and inform protective measures for faith-based organizations and community gathering places.

Old Dominion University Shooting: Terrorism probe underway after Old Dominion University shooting

A fatal shooting at Old Dominion University on March 12, 2026, is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a potential act of terrorism. The gunman, identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, opened fire inside a classroom containing ROTC students in Constant Hall, killing an ROTC instructor and injuring two others before being subdued and killed by students in the room. Authorities said the suspect had previously served in the Army National Guard and had a prior federal conviction for attempting to provide material support to the terrorist group Islamic State. Court records indicate he was sentenced in 2017 and released from prison in 2024 before carrying out the attack. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is assisting with the investigation, and officials have credited the actions of students who intervened with preventing additional casualties.

Analyst Comments: While this incident does not appear to be directly related to faith communities, it remains relevant to the broader security environment and situational awareness efforts. Violent incidents on university campuses illustrate how lone actors can mobilize quickly and target locations with large or predictable gatherings of people. These types of attacks are often influenced by broader geopolitical or ideological flashpoints and, with the Iran conflict continuing to generate global attention, the potential for inspired lone-actor violence remains a consideration for organizations that fit common mass-casualty target profiles.

For security practitioners, the incident serves as a reminder that universities and similar open environments can present attractive targets due to their accessibility and population density. Member organizations located on or near campuses, such as faith-based organizations that operate student ministries, worship spaces, or community programming, may want to maintain heightened situational awareness and ensure that staff and volunteers are familiar with reporting mechanisms and emergency procedures. Reinforcing communication channels with campus security and local law enforcement, and ensuring clear escalation pathways for suspicious activity, can help organizations respond more effectively within the broader and evolving security environment.
