Minnesota churches roiled by legal battle over ICE surveillance and right to protest

Two federal cases involving Twin Cities churches illustrate the continuing tension between immigration enforcement, protest activity, and the protection of worship spaces more than six months after a federal enforcement surge in Minnesota. In Minneapolis, University Baptist Church and affiliated religious groups contend that Homeland Security surveillance of protest-related meetings on church property violated an injunction limiting immigration enforcement at houses of worship; the government says agents were investigating alleged efforts to obstruct or harm federal personnel, and a ruling is pending. In St. Paul, more than three dozen protesters are seeking dismissal of federal civil-rights charges after disrupting worship at Cities Church, where a pastor also served as an ICE official. Together, the cases present competing claims about sanctuary, religious liberty, lawful protest, and congregants’ right to worship without intrusion. Faith leaders across the region also report lingering fear among migrants, concern about surveillance, increased security measures, sustained requests for assistance, and growing fatigue among congregations.

AI Data Center Revolt

Humans First has launched the “AI Data Center Revolt,” a nationwide bus tour opposing rapid data-center expansion and seeking greater local control over projects that may affect electricity costs, water use, infrastructure, public subsidies, and community planning. The tour began September 12 in Austin, TX and is scheduled to cover more than 30 stops and 7,500 miles before concluding in California, with events planned in communities where proposed or existing data centers have generated concern. Organizers say the campaign is intended to elevate residents’ concerns, promote transparency, and press for meaningful community participation in decisions about large-scale artificial intelligence infrastructure rather than advocate for a blanket national ban.

Analyst Comments: Humans First previously organized protests at numerous locations nationwide, though available reporting indicates that individual gatherings were generally modest in size. The current multi-state tour may nevertheless generate localized demonstrations, media attention, traffic changes, or other short-term activity near scheduled stops.
