At least seven faith leaders were arrested during a protest outside the ICE processing facility in Broadview, Illinois, where clergy from Christian, Jewish, Hindu, and other traditions held a multifaith worship service to highlight the suffering of detainees. The demonstrates presented a letter offering spiritual care to those inside, after repeated refusals from ICE to let the clergy in. Several faith leaders described a harsh police response with some being pulled, shoved, and arrested. During detention, the arrested clergy prayed, sang “We Shall Overcome
and recited poetry Protesters decried the denial of religious access such as communion as a violation of religious freedom noting that such denials have occurred repeatedly.
Analyst Comments: This incident shows how faith-based leaders who may engage in public demonstrations or offer ministry in high-tension environments should know their rights and be aware. Clergy and faith-based volunteers may consider taking steps to protect themselves and understand their rights before participating in protests or offering spiritual support at government facilities. This includes knowing local laws, understanding limit on physical access to secure locations, and being aware of how law enforcement typically manages crowd control. Organizations may also consider ensuring clear safety protocols, designated communication plans, and training in how to respond if a situation escalates. It is also important for faith leaders to know their constitutional rights around peaceful expression and religious practice, while also recognizing that refusal to follow law enforcement instructions can result in arrest even during nonviolent actions.
