Canada: Up to 30 shots fired after man opened fire on officer outside Ontario synagogue

A 29-year-old man armed with a shotgun opened fire on a Belleville police officer stationed outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue during Yom Kippur, prompting an exchange of as many as 30 shots involving two officers. The suspected shooter suffered life-threatening injuries, while Const. Jeff Smith was seriously wounded but stabilized in intensive care. About two dozen worshippers were inside the synagogue, but none were injured. Authorities have not established a motive or determined whether the synagogue or Jewish community was deliberately targeted. The synagogue canceled its remaining services, local police increased patrols around places of worship, and local and federal leaders condemned the violence while emphasizing the right of Jewish Canadians to worship safely.

The publication reviews common backgrounds and behavioral warning signs among workplace attackers and presents a scalable eight-step framework for identifying, assessing, and managing concerning individuals or situations before violence occurs. A free virtual event will introduce the guide for professionals in management, security, human resources, information technology, cybersecurity, insider threat, law enforcement, mental health, and community safety.
