Several states report cyberattacks as spy agencies suspect Iran is targeting water

Federal authorities are investigating a series of cyber incidents affecting municipal water systems across at least seven states after attackers remotely accessed internet-connected programmable logic controllers (PLCs), causing operational disruptions such as changes in water pressure and localized flooding. A joint FBI and EPA alert warned that “malicious cyber actors” have been tampering with operational technology used by water utilities, while U.S. intelligence agencies have assessed that Iran is the likely source of the campaign, though the investigation remains ongoing and no formal public attribution has been announced. The incidents have also generated public debate following comments from President Trump disputing the intelligence assessment and attributing the attacks to failures at the state level. Despite the differing public narratives, cybersecurity researchers, incident responders, and U.S. government reporting have broadly aligned in assessing that the activity is consistent with an Iranian cyber campaign, although the official investigation remains ongoing.

Fire at Iowa kosher meat plant shuts down production ahead of the High Holidays

A fire that investigators determined began accidentally in the laundry room at AgriStar Processing in Postville, Iowa, destroyed at least 75% of one of the largest kosher meat processing plants in the United States, putting more than 600 employees out of work and disrupting a significant portion of the nation’s kosher meat supply ahead of the High Holidays. According to OU Kosher, the damaged facility means that “a significant portion of kosher beef and chicken slaughtered and sold in the U.S. will not enter the kosher supply chain,” reducing product availability. Efforts are underway to increase production at other facilities. OU Kosher also cautioned that supply shortages can create opportunities for fraudulent activity targeting kosher consumers.
