First Baptist Church Data Breach Class Action Settlement

First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana, agreed to settle a class action lawsuit stemming from a July 2025 cyberattack that exposed the personal information of approximately 4,251 individuals, including names and social security numbers. While the church denies any wrongdoing, it agreed to resolve the litigation to avoid the costs and uncertainty of continued legal proceedings. Under the proposed settlement, affected individuals may seek reimbursement for documented identity theft-related expenses, out-of-pocket costs, lost time spent responding to the breach, or elect to receive an alternative cash payment. The settlement remains subject to final court approval.

Analyst Comments: This settlement highlights that the impact of a data breach extends far beyond technical recovery. In addition to restoring systems, organizations may face lawsuits, legal expenses, settlement costs, and the challenge of rebuilding trust with employees, volunteers, and congregants. For faith-based organizations with limited resources, these long-term impacts can be significant.

Investing in cybersecurity is often far less costly than responding to a breach. Strong access controls, multi-factor authentication, regular security updates, employee awareness training, and thoughtful data retention practices can reduce both the likelihood and consequences of an incident. This case reinforces that protecting sensitive information is not only a cybersecurity priority but also an important part of organizational risk management and maintaining community trust.
