A North Miami man was arrested after police say he attempted to kidnap a woman at gunpoint outside a church in Port St. Lucie. According to investigators, the suspect allegedly approached the woman in the church parking lot as she arrived for the service, attempted to force her into his vehicle, and displayed a firearm while trying to pull her away. The victim had previously obtained a protective injunction against the suspect after a history of aggressive behavior. The attempted abduction was interrupted when other individuals in the parking lot intervened, prompting the suspect to flee. He was later located and arrested on multiple charges, including attempted kidnapping with a weapon, aggravated assault, and violating a protective order.
Analyst Comments: This incident highlights that security risks affecting congregants can extend beyond threats directed at the organization itself. Personal disputes, domestic violence situations, stalking cases, and other individual security concerns may follow congregants onto a House of Worship’s property and place additional members, volunteers, and staff at risk. Faith-based organizations should recognize that their facilities often serve as gathering places where personal conflicts can unexpectedly intersect with the broader faith community. Leaders and safety teams may be trained to recognize warning signs, understand how to respond to protective-order violations or suspicious behavior, and establish clear procedures for reporting concerns and coordinating with law enforcement.

About the series. “Intelligence” often conjures images of secret agents working in the shadows to protect national security. Intelligence isn’t just for government agents, with a little guidance, anyone can do it! Intelligence involves a systematic process of collecting, analyzing, and using information to anticipate, detect, and prevent threats before they cause harm. This process helps decision makers weigh alternatives and make threat-informed, fact-based choices via enhanced situational awareness. By leveraging intelligence, houses of worship can enhance their overall safety and security, ensuring their spaces remain welcoming sanctuaries for worship yet prepared for potential incidents.
The FB-ISAO’s sponsor Gate 15 publishes a daily newsletter called the SUN.
