Church attacks up 800% over 6 years

The FISMTV article cites a Family Research Council (FRC) report that “shows attacks on American churches have increased by 800% over the past six years.”

“Between January 2018 and November 2023, there were over 900 attacks. The vast majority of these were acts of vandalism, but there were also more serious crimes – such as bomb threats and attempted arson.

According to the report, church attacks skyrocketed last year. There were over 430 incidents in 2023, more than double the year before.”

The 183-page FRC report can be found here.

Analyst Comments:

While the FB-ISAO Blogs report daily on individual church attacks, it can be helpful to see the big picture. Faith-Based Organization should consider reviewing the report to see the current threat environment and evaluate their current protective measures.

Man’s ‘kill manifesto’ outlined plot to shoot males at Virginia church over failed prayer and lack of romance, police say.

The Blazemedia article quotes what the police call a “kill manifesto”:

“Despite my continued sacrifices in the name of duty, my quiet donations to churches, God’s community,” he allegedly wrote, “praying on my knees every morning at 5am for an hour, thanking God in Jesus’ name, despite my faith even in my worst of days, nothing has changed, my mental health continues to deteriorate. I am not allowed to be in love. To experience love. To experience a romantic relationship.”  The letter went on to say that he was targeting men in romantic relationships. “I want them to know what it’s like to be me — to labor through yearning for that romantic love and never obtaining it,” he allegedly wrote.

Analyst Comments

Faith-Based ISAO highlighted the incident in the 26 September 2023 Daily Awareness Post (DAP). The incident was an excellent example of a concerned citizen reporting suspicious activity to the authorities, law enforcement coordination across multiple jurisdictions, and robust house of worship security prevented a tragedy from occurring.

Being aware of perpetrators’ manifestos will assist Faith-Based Organizations in preparing for future threats by similar bad actors.
