US Department of State Worldwide Caution
“Due to increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests, the Department of State advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution. U.S. citizens should:
- Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists.
- Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive information and alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency overseas.
- Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter.”
Additionally, CNN reported on the Worldwide Caution. “It’s not necessarily any one thing but everything that we’re watching around the world,” State Department spokesperson Matt Miller said Thursday at a State Department briefing.
Analyst Comments:
The US Department of State is advising increased caution for all overseas travel. Faith-Based Organizations and individuals should reevaluate security for oversees operations and travel.
The Department of State also issued Latest Information for U.S. Citizens in the Middle East.
Department of State Travel Advisories for individual countries can be found at Travel Advisories (state.gov).
A wide variety of information to make international travel safer can be found at the State Department’s International Travel page.
Tourist sites and protest crowds are vulnerable to vehicle ramming attacks, which can be done by a lone actor, with little resources. The following international resources provide steps to avoid and mitigate vehicle ramming attacks:
- DHS / CISA: Vehicle Ramming Security Awareness for Soft Targets and Crowded Places
- NCTC: Vehicle-Borne Attacks: Tactics and Mitigation (First Responders Toolbox)
- UK: Countering Vehicle as a Weapon: Best Practice Guidance for Goods Vehicle Operators and Drivers
- UK: Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM)
- Australia: Hostile Vehicle Guidelines for Crowded Places
- European Commission: Review on Vehicle Barrier Protection Guidances
With heightened tensions, consideration should also be given to personal safety within the United States. CISA provides a Personal Security Considerations worksheet for individuals.
