Update on the FBI Investigation of the Attempted Assassination of Former President Donald Trump
While the investigation to date indicates the shooter acted alone, the FBI continues to conduct logical investigative activity to determine if there were any co-conspirators associated with this attack. At this time, there are no current public safety concerns. Key updates include:
- The FBI has not identified a motive for the shooter’s actions, but are working to determine the sequence of events and the shooter’s movements prior to the shooting, collecting and reviewing evidence, conducting interviews, and following up on all leads. We have also obtained the shooter’s telephone for examination.
- The FBI has searched the shooter’s home and vehicle to collect additional evidence. Suspicious devices found at both locations have been rendered safe by bomb technicians and are being evaluated at the FBI Laboratory.
- The firearm used in the shooting was purchased legally.
- The shooter was not known to the FBI prior to this incident.
Analyst Comments:
According to reports, “The gunman had his father’s AR-style rifle and was perched atop a nearby roof when some rallygoers pointed him out to local law enforcement, said two law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing criminal probe.” As details come out in the investigation we will learn more about the failings of the perimeter security, and the importance of expanding an organizations area of awareness, but it is also important to stress to communities the importance of “See Something, Say Something.”
We have previously shared The First Responder’s Toolbox resource titled “Bystanders are Key to Countering Terrorism” and this is an important message to reinforce as the Nation approaches a tense election season.
