The above fire as a weapon attack shows the potential loss that can occur in such attacks. Many violent protests utilize fire as a weapon and a house of worship may be an intended target or an incidental victim. Hostile events are not always active shooters. Houses of worship face a variety of threats.
As the May 2024 Daily Awareness Post 2 reported, last week was the U.S. Fire Administration’s Arson Awareness Week: Protecting Houses of Worship — Fire as a Weapon. They provide guidance on the Protecting Houses of Worship Against Arson website.
CISA provides a two-page Fire As A Weapon Action Guide. This guide helps identify potential indicators of an attack using fire as a weapon and provides mitigation strategies and recommended response procedures.
The DAP regularly reports on fires at houses of worship. These reports include fire as a weapon, arson, and accidental fires. Faith-Based Organizations should consider utilizing the above resources to prevent or mitigate all types of fires.
