Minnesota governor says a shooting has occurred at a Minneapolis school

A shooting occurred early this morning at Annunciation Catholic School in south Minneapolis during the first week of the school year, when students and staff were gathered for an all-school Mass scheduled at 8:15am. Governor Tim Walz confirmed he had been briefed on the incident and expressed on X that he was “praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence”. Students were evacuated from the pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade school amid a large response from local and state authorities, including law enforcement. The latest update from the Justice Department has indicated that there are three dead, including the shooter, with an additional 20 injured.

Analyst Comments: The shooting at Annunciation Catholic School highlights both the ongoing challenges schools face in ensuring student safety and the emotional impact of violence disrupting the very state of a new academic year. While details remain limited, the swift response by local and state authorities suggest preparedness and coordination. Faith-based institutions as well as public schools should consider enhanced security planning for gatherings, crisis communication protocols, collaboration with law enforcement, and preparedness training.

Swatting hoaxes on college campuses spark panic and an FBI probe

A surge of hoax active-shooter calls, known as “swatting”, has recently targeted multiple U.S. college campuses, including the University of Arkansas, Iowa State, University of Colorado-Boulder, Villanova University, and others. These false reports often included staged details like background gunfire, leading to lockdowns, frantic messages, and students barricading classrooms in fear. While no actual threats were found, the psychological toll on students and faculty has been significant, compounding anxiety on campuses already accustomed to active shooter drills. The FBI has launched investigations into the incidents, which experts warn not only traumatize communities but also strain emergency resources and complicate law enforcement’s ability to discern real threats in the future.

Analyst Comments: The wave of swatting hoaxes against college campuses shows a troubling evolution of threat tactics that exploit both technological anonymity and the heightened sensitivity around campus shootings. While no physical harm occurs, the psychological and operational impact may be significant. From a security standpoint it is important to share accurate information and balance rapid emergency response. Awareness campaigns may help students and faculty understand the seriousness of swatting while reinforcing trust in emergency protocols. Tomorrow’s Weekly Report will take a closer look at swatting, which builds on some of our recent reporting on The Com.

How Terror Groups Plan to Strike Churches in the United States

Christian Warrior warns that intelligence indicates both Al-Qaeda and ISIS continue to plot attacks on U.S. attacks on U.S. churches possibly even coordinating strikes against multiple congregations simultaneously. He emphasizes that overseas attacks, often timed to coincide with major Christian holidays and carried out via suicide bombings, armed assaults, or hostage-taking, reveal enduring patterns that could be replicated domestically. It is important to not succumb to fear or transform worship spaces into fortresses, but rather to empower security teams to serve as enhanced greetings, welcoming yet vigilant, so that congregations remain open and inviting while being prepared to safeguard against these credible threats.

Analyst Comments: This article highlights how there is a persistent security challenge for faith-based communities, where there is a need to balance openness while simultaneously mitigating against targeted violence. While the likelihood of coordinated attacks in the U.S. remains uncertain, the emphasis on pattern recognition is consistent with known extremist tactics. This enforces an approach for layered defense like situational awareness, coordination with local law enforcement, and trained volunteers who can recognize suspicious behavior.

Church of England alleged to have breached abuse survivors’ data

The Church of England is facing renewed scrutiny after nearly 200 abuse survivors’ personal data was allegedly exposed when an official failed to conceal contact details in an email connected to its new compensation program. The breach comes amid longstanding abuse scandals that have not only shaken public trust but also created deep internal challenges, with the Church warning earlier this summer that ongoing fallout from abuse cases could spark a staffing crisis as clergy members decline. In July, the General Synod formally approved the redress scheme to provide compensation and support to victims, but the recent data breach risks undermining those efforts by further eroding confidence in the institution’s ability to handle sensitive matters responsibly.

Analyst Comments: This case underscores the critical role insider treats both intentional and unintentional play in data security. Carelessness by trusted employees, such as failing to properly redact sensitive information, can pose risks comparable to those from malicious actors, emphasizing the need for robust internal training, protocols, and accountability measures to protect privacy.
