CSU: Updated Forecast for 2025 Hurricane Activity
Colorado State University (CSU) has decreased its forecast slightly and is now calling for a slightly above-normal 2025 Atlantic basin hurricane season. The primary reason for the slight decrease in the outlook is both observed and predicted high levels of Caribbean shear. High levels of Caribbean shear in June/July are typically associated with less active hurricane seasons.
However, they also anticipate the tropical Pacific to be characterized by ENSO neutral conditions. Sea surface temperatures across the eastern and central Atlantic are slightly warmer than normal, but not as warm as they were last year at this time. A warmer-than-normal tropical Atlantic combined with likely ENSO neutral conditions typically provides a more conducive dynamic and thermodynamic environment for hurricane formation and intensification. We anticipate a slightly above-average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental United States coastline and in the Caribbean.
Analyst Comments: As with all hurricane seasons, coastal residents are reminded that it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season. Thorough preparations should be made every season, regardless of predicted activity. Recent tragic incidents in Texas demonstrate the importance of investing in preparedness resources to ensure the safety of people and places. Organizations in hurricane-prone regions (and not just along the coast), should consider reviewing the Ready Business Hurricane Toolkit and taking necessary actions.
FB-ISAO Newsletter, v7, Issue 7 – FB-ISAO
The July 2025 FB-ISAO newsletter reports raising physical and cyber threat levels to “ELEVATED” for U.S. faith-based organizations, reflecting on increased likelihood of incidents without specific threats. Recent conflicts, including U.S.-Iran tensions, have heightened risks of arson, harassment, protests, and cyberattacks against religious groups. FB-ISAO is actively sharing daily threat intelligence, advising on suspicious mail handling, and expanding its Operational Resilience Group to help members strengthen physical and cyber readiness in this evolving environment.
