These updates are shared to help raise the situational awareness of Faith-Based organizations to best defend against and mitigate the impacts from all-hazards threats including physical security, cybersecurity, and natural disasters.
FB-ISAO Threat Levels Explainer
In 2011, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) replaced the color-coded alerts of the Homeland Security Advisory System (HSAS) with the National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS), designed to more effectively communicate information about terrorist threats by providing timely, detailed information to the American public. It recognizes that Americans all share responsibility for the nation’s security, and should always be aware of the heightened risk of terrorist attack in the United States and what they should do. FB-ISAO is a private 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to provide members with information, analysis, and capabilities to help reduce risk while enhancing preparedness, security, and resilience. In fulfilling the part of the mission that addresses reducing risk and enhancing preparedness, FB-ISAO sets its own threat level based on potential and adverse threats and events that can affect the Faith-Based Community.
As a membership driven organization, FB-ISAO established working groups, led by members, and tasked with guiding the organization. One such working group is the Operational Resilience Group (ORG). The ORG will focus on identifying non-cybersecurity-related threats – those pertaining to man-made threats, natural hazards and health issues – relevant to the community and the associated risks, helping to inform the FB-ISAO physical threat level, developing actions members can consider given a specific threat level, and other activities relating to enhancing the awareness, security and resilience of our members and community, during both routine operations and during incidents relevant to the community.
As warranted, the BRG asses the current threat environment based on our general, nationwide, threat assessment for the US community of faith. Support for the modification of the threat level statement is also based on open source information, government guidance, member input, and Incident Reports. As always, for local threat information, members are encouraged to work closely with neighborhood partners, local law enforcement, state and local fusion centers, local FBI field offices, DHS Protective Security Advisors and other local experts and responders.
