US West Coast, Hawaii and Alaska impacted by tsunami waves after massive quake off Russia
A massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off Russia triggering tsunami alerts across the Pacific. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued tsunami warnings for Hawaii, and advisories or watches for Alaska and the entire U.S. West Coast. In Hawaii residents in Honolulu, Kahului, Hilo, Haleiwa, and Hanalei were ordered to evacuate to higher grounds. Hours later the warning was downgraded from a warning to an advisory. Authorities highlighted that even seemingly moderate wave heights could cause prolonged flooding and dangerous currents.
Analyst Comments: The rapid activation of tsunami alerts following the magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia’s peninsula highlights the strength of monitoring and early warning systems. This event reinforces the importance of community preparedness and public education regarding the different levels of tsunami alerts. Organizations with facilities in coastal areas that are prone to tsunami or hurricane activity are encouraged to review evacuation routes and best practices with their community members.

What Starmer’s plan for the UK to recognize a Palestinian state means
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the UK will formally recognize the State of Palestine in September 2025, unless Israel meets several preconditions: a ceasefire in Gaza, direct access for UN humanitarian aid, a halt to West Bank annexation, and renewed commitment to a two-state peace process. Starmer emphasized that Palestinian statehood is an “inalienable right”, and insisted the move does not hinge on Hamas’s disarmament. The decision follows France’s similar pledge and comes amid mounting domestic pressure. Israel called this a “reward for Hamas” meanwhile Palestinian Authority leaders welcomed the move.
Analyst Comments: The UK’s plan to recognize a Palestinian state signals a major policy shift aimed at pressuring Israel toward a ceasefire and renewed peace talks. It reflects growing domestic and international support for Palestinian statehood amid frustration over the Gaza conflict. Faith-based organizations that may have mission trips planned should consider monitoring increased tensions, protests, or backlash that may be domestic or abroad.
