Wave of car break-ins hits Raleigh churches: $2,000 and handgun stolen

A recent report reveals that on Sunday, July 13th, thieves broke into at least 31 vehicles parked at five different churches in Raleigh. Surveillance footage from one of the churches captured a black Infiniti pulling up during services, with the suspect smashing the window of a pickup truck and stealing a handgun and $2,000 in cash, neither of which were visible from the outside.

Police believe criminals are targeting pick-up trucks because they suspect them to contain weapons. They warn congregants to remove any visible clues like firearms or gun-brand stickers that may hint a weapon presence.

Analyst Comments: These coordinated HOW parking lot break-ins highlight predictable vulnerabilities that criminals exploit like vehicles left unattended for extended periods of time during services with minimal surveillance or patrol presence. HOW should consider rethinking parking security postures as individuals are targeting pickup trucks in belief that there are weapons in the vehicle.

Recommendations for places of worship:

  • Visible deterrence like security guards
  • Camera coverage in the parking lot
  • Sufficient lighting throughout the parking area
  • Access control and barriers
  • Congregant reminders to hide valuables out of plain sight

From Anxiety to Action: Strengthening Jewish Security in DC

The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington is providing $462,750 in emergency grants to 50 Jewish institutions in the DC area to strengthen security amid rising threats. Many organizations face skyrocketing security costs and growing community anxiety, leading some to cut programs or change security fees. Through its JShield initiative, the Federation is also offering free training, security planning, and grant assistance to help Jewish communities stay safe while continuing religious and educational activities openly.

Analyst Comments: This initiative demonstrated community resilience moving beyond fear to layered preparedness through funding, training, and partnerships. Rising threats against Jewish institutions require proactive steps, and the Federation’s grant helps close gaps for facilities that may not have the resources for security personnel. The use of JShielf for situational awareness, drills, and volunteer team training is a way to help communities that may be seeking cost-effective security on constrained budgets.
