Social Impact Report: 2023
NewsGuard’s journalists spent 2023 rating and updating ratings for more than 35,000 news and information sources accounting for more than 95% of online engagement with news, cataloging more than 1,800 false narratives, and uncovering misinformation campaigns and trends on topics where misinformation is creating real-world harm.
Analyst Comments:
Key findings of the research include:
- 287 domains that have spread at least one myth about the Israel-Hamas war
- 89% average rate of misinformation spread by ChatGPT and Bard when prompted on news topics
- 81 false claims related to the Israel-Hamas war cataloged in their Misinformation Fingerprints database
- 700+ brands—including several Fortune 500 companies—running ads on egregious misinformation sites
- 603 unreliable AI-generated News sites found in 2023
- 57 nonprofit and government organizations found to be advertising on websites that publish misinformation
New Human Trafficking Resources Released
SchoolSafety.gov was created by the federal government to provide schools and districts with actionable recommendations to create safe and supportive learning environments for students and educators. A new resource guide helps school understand the role they can play in identifying potential victims while offering best practices for response.
Analyst Comments:
Schools are uniquely positioned to support sudents facing human trafficking and exploitation. Because of the regular interaction between educators and students, school personnel can help identify and report suspected cases of trafficking and connect affected students to critical services. There are several strategies school leaders, staff, and districts can implement to help identify, prevent, and respond to human tracking including:
- Create a safe and supportive school environment
- Increase awareness and education
- Develop and implement prevention and response plans
