A Tempest at RansomHub: Major new cyber threat group expands
Velvet Tempest, a well-known threat actor, has followed other high-profile former BlackCat members and joined RansomHub, supporting the notion that RansomHub is a new major group in the ransomware ecosystem. Some evidence suggests that RansomHub may be led by the administrators of BlackCat, which if true, suggests their administrators are untrustworthy and may steal ransom payments from their own members. Eroding trust between cybercriminals is an important part of long-term disruption of the ecosystem.
Analyst Comments:
On Monday we reported on RansomHub as they listed a Washington DC church as a victim organization. We’ll remind readers that in SOC Radar’s profile on RansomHub, their “About” page stipulates that they do not allow non-profit organizations to be targeted. This week’s report shows that it is either a lie, or they don’t have complete control of all of their affiliates. Targeted organizations should always remember that criminals lie.
As RansomHub continues to increase their activity and have shown a clear willingness to target houses of worship, FB-ISAO recommends members better understand how to defend against ransomware and other types of cyberattacks. The resources below offer a good starting point for organizations looking to build cyber resiliency. If you are not currently receiving the daily ransomware report, and would like to, please consider joining the FB-ISAO as a member.
